Our Compost: Why It’s Special

At Synergy of Soil, we believe that truly exceptional compost goes beyond just breaking down organic matter—it creates a thriving ecosystem of life beneath your feet. Our compost is more than just fertilizer; it’s a biologically rich amendment designed to enhance soil health and boost plant vitality. But what makes our compost so special? It all comes down to high-quality ingredients, a meticulous process, and a commitment to biodiversity.

Cultured Indigenous Microorganisms

Our compost journey begins in nature, where we culture microorganisms from healthy, local ecosystems. Over the years, we’ve carefully sourced these microbes from a variety of locations and seasonal conditions, targeting a broad range of plant families and species. This approach ensures rich microbial diversity in every batch.

Inoculating Our Compost

After collecting our microbes, the next step is cultivating them on a carefully crafted compost substrate. This involves creating an ideal environment for microbial growth and reproduction.

We use a balanced mix of simple and complex carbon sources, along with fats that nourish fungal communities.

  • Wheat bran from Roaring Fork Mill serves as a simple carbon source that energizes bacteria and generates heat.

  • Crimped oats provide a complex, slow-release food source that supports sustained fungal development.

  • Wood chips add structure, creating essential air pockets that support gas exchange and maintain aerobic conditions.

The Final Step

Once our microbes have fully colonized the carbon-rich compost, we blend it with finished traditional compost and topsoil. This allows the indigenous microbes to “marry” with the existing biology in the soil, increasing their chances of survival and effectiveness. To support this process, it’s important to keep the compost moist and covered as it integrates into your garden.

The Perfect Microbial Balance

The culmination of these processes results in living compost—meaning essential soil biology, from bacteria and fungi to nematodes and protozoa, are present. This balance is critical because:

  • Bacteria break down organic matter into plant-available nutrients.

  • Fungi build soil structure and help with nutrient absorption.

  • Nematodes and protozoa regulate microbial populations and cycle nutrients efficiently.

By ensuring the right microbial diversity, our compost maximizes nutrient availability, water retention, and overall soil vitality.
